The cellar door sales outlet was built in 1997 and was awarded a 1999 Lower Hunter Civic Design Award for excellence in the design of smaller scale non-residential development.

The primary objective was for a building that blended well into the local environment, at the same time fulfilling the commercial imperative of being distinctive, memorable and easily identifiable as a retail outlet.

These diverse needs were satisfied by the use of gray Colorbond corrugated sheeting to harmonize with the surrounding gum trees, on a distinctly stylish building with sharply pitched roof and natural timber windows and doors.

The curved lintel above the double entry doors, natural brick paths and small outbuildings for storage and toilet facilities contribute to the “country” feel.

The interior of the building is light and airy. The brick entrance path flows seamlessly into the inside flooring while the cathedral ceiling, lined with straw batts, large exposed beams and black iron fixing plates, provide a relaxed atmosphere and an ideal ambience for the buildings intended purpose.

Situated beside a small pond, which attracts a variety of waterfowl and other bird life, the building has lived up to Jan and Jorg’s expectations. We have recently added a large deck extending from the Cellar Door out to the pond to enable us to utilise this feature to the maximum.

The cellar door is open to the public 7 days per week.
